UDL & Executive Function: Who Owns the Learning?

Educators work too hard to do the extra work of managing the workload of students. Attend this session to understand how you can start to shift your classroom to a more Student Led focus, through use of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Executive Function guideline. By attending, not only will you learn more about the theory, but also see examples from real classrooms.

Michelle Fickle is a PreK-5 Instructional Coach with the Richland School District with a master's degree in literacy education and is UDL Level 3 certified through CAST. She is passionate about partnering with teachers to plan and execute high-quality instruction that meets the needs of all students regardless of their strengths or needs. She most recently co-designed and co-delivered three year-long professional learning opportunities designed to give teachers, administrators, and other educational professionals a solid foundation of Universal Design for Learning and how its instructional design can help remove barriers to student learning in classrooms.

I am currently a high school co-teacher in ELA, History, and Special Education. I have experience in high school, middle school, general education, special education, and instructional coaching! My colleagues and I are working to help teachers and students through training in Universal Design for Learning in our district and beyond! Our focus on supporting teachers to support students has led to growth and a three-year professional development cycle within our district and we are expanding our training to other area school districts to ensure educational access for All Kids!

Renae Yecha is a special education teacher, currently serving as an Instructional Coach within the Richland School District. Her focus on educating all students stems from having an older brother with intellectual disabilities and autism. Her experience and passion has fueled helping other professionals be able to meet the needs of the students within their classroom, no matter the barriers they may experience. This is especially evident in her work through helping others understand Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
