Integrating Computer Science into the Science Classroom

Join ESD 105’s Regional Educational Technology Coordinator, Mike Batali, and Regional Science Coordinator, Luke Matlack, for a session on their approach to enhancing teaching methods and boosting student engagement by integrating Computer Science (CS) into Science classrooms. Topics include: Introducing Computational Thinking; Practical use of Makey Makey, Ozobot, and micro:bit as aligned to standards; How the micro:bit is integrated with Climate Action's "Land" and "Energy" kits in science lessons; Tips for incorporating these technologies into family STEAM events.

Mike Batali has served since September of 2022 as the Regional Educational Technology Coordinator for Educational Service District (ESD) 105 based in Yakima, WA. He provides innovative professional learning opportunities for Ed Tech and CS-related topics for educators through coaching, workshops, and presentations. Previous to his role at ESD 105, Mike was an innovative classroom teacher of technology and curriculum developer for over 27 years at high school, community college, and university levels in the state of Washington.

Luke Matlack Regional Science Coordinator Coordinator Educational Service District 105 Luke has 4 years of experience as a Science coordinator with Educational Service District 105 which includes supporting school districts in the region with curriculum support, instructional strategies, and professional development. Before becoming the Regional Science Coordinator, Luke was a Math./Science Coordinator in the Migrant department at ESD 105. Before coming to Educational Service District 105 Luke was a classroom teacher for 9 years, teaching Math and Science to students in Kindergarten through sixth grade in Mabton, Washington.
