Neural Insights: Neurodiversity-Affirming Approaches to Behavior

Wednesday, February 26, 8:00 am–9:50 am
Seattle Convention Center - 617

In this workshop, we will explore low and high tech solutions for common barriers to learning such as lack of predictability, belonging, autonomy and others. Stress responses may externalize differently from student to student but often the sources of stress are connected to similar barriers in the learning environment. What do we do when common behavior management strategies don’t work for ALL of our students? We create access points by using neurodiversity-affirming practices which incorporate low and/or high tech solutions. When we apply a neural lens and start thinking about brains instead of points, stickers and tickets, we co-create solutions that work!

Neural Education

I am a neurodiversity-affirming advocate with 14 years in education. My approach evolved from traditional methods to integrating neuroscience with teaching and learning. As a board member of Neural Education, I promote the latest research and provide professional development for educators. With an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, I served as Director of Student Services in a Washington School District, focusing on educational neuroscience and neurodiversity. Now, as co-founder of ShiftEd Perspectives, I am dedicated to removing barriers and creating inclusive, supportive learning environments that prioritize autonomy and self-efficacy for all learners.
